Fitness has always been a passion of my throughout my life. At first, it was registered sport teams and dance classes. In high school I began going to the gym after school and learning the importance of a healthy routine. In college, I continued my gym routine and began focusing more on weight lifting and the physique aspect of fitness. Now being a mom of two, working full time and creating this blog when I can get a breathing moment, have been focusing on the yoga lifestyle for over 5 years now and never turning back. But how did my yoga journey begin?
5 years ago… I had just had my first child. At the time, my husband was in the military and we had just moved to a new station. I was constantly alone and felt like I was raising my daughter as a single parent. Life had turned completely upside down. I was adjusting to my new postpartum body and life and looking for a creative and fun outlet, so I decided to give yoga a shot. I had dabbled in a few yoga classes growing up but never considered it “ fun” and didn’t think of it as a workout (I know how ridiculous is that?) fast forward to my postpartum life and something in me decided to give it a go. I searched on YouTube for a vinyasa class to do in my living room while my daughter was napping, and had so much fun with it! No judgment, I’m sure it wasn’t pretty, but after finishing the class, I felt accomplished and proud of myself that I did something for ME.
I continually showed up for myself on the mat day in and day out and what used to be hard, seemed to get more and more easy. I was trying different styles, different instructors on YouTube and after my first year or so of practice, wanted to dive deeper into the yoga lifestyle and learn more. I have read countless books and listened to multiple podcast shows expressing the foundation of a yogi lifestyle and how to live like a calm yogi. That being said, I still definitely lose my shit at least once a day, but I have given myself the tools to know how to calm my body and my thoughts.
I have learned so many life lessons on my mat that seem to transfer seamlessly to my everyday life. My confidence has soared since I began meditation and I am accepting myself more and more each day. Am I a perfect yogi student? Absolutely not, but I’m taking a step in the right direction to finding my best self and continuously check in with my emotions and body.
So what’s my advice? Even if you don’t think you’ll enjoy yoga and even if you don’t think you’re flexible enough or skilled enough, disregard those thoughts, try a class and really reflect on how you feel after. Nothing is going to come easy at first, it takes time and patience but stick with it and you’ll be glad you did!
Make today worth living my loves and do something that makes your soul happy:)
Namaste,
Maddy
